Chandrayaan-3: How AI helped India Create History By Landing On The Moon
As planned, the ambitious Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft made a successful landing on the surface of the earth's satellite on Wednesday, making India the first country to reach the moon's south pole. Vikram Lander finally impacted the moon's surface after a roughly 15-minute landing sequence, adding India to the list of nations that have now colonised the moon.
A Journey Beyond Earth
The Chandrayaan-3 mission was not just about reaching the Moon; it was a journey into the future of space exploration. India's space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), aimed to use AI to enhance the precision and decision-making processes during the critical stages of landing.
The mission was successful thanks to a number of technologies, butArtificial Intelligence (AI) was especially important during the early hours of the landing. One of the most recent developments in the discipline was the lander's descent, which was totally managed by artificial intelligence.
How AI Facilitated the Lander's Successful Soft Landing on the Moon
This was one of the most challenging phases of the landing sequence, according to ISRO Chairman S. Somnath-”The space agency used AI to assure a flawless change in orientation after Chandrayaan-2, India's last lunar mission, had some issues. Vikram Lander's orientation during the final phases of the fall was changed from horizontal to vertical thanks to the hard work of a committed crew that educated the AI software through numerous simulations. AI was able to adjust the orientation of the lander by 90 degrees tilting it with the aid of the Lander Horizontal Velocity Camera (LHVC)”.
The success of achieving a soft landing on the Moon's surface was made possible by the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the lander's mission. In the critical moments leading up to landing, AI algorithms played a pivotal role in analyzing real-time data, adjusting propulsion systems, and making split-second decisions. By swiftly adapting to changing conditions and unforeseen obstacles, AI ensured that the lander touched down smoothly and securely. This remarkable feat showcases AI's ability to assist and enhance the precision and complexity of space exploration, opening doors to even greater achievements in the cosmos.
AI software was utilised to control the fall, which got under way at 5.45 PM on August 23, Wednesday, by calculating the speed and position of the lander above the moon's surface using devices including velocimeters and altimeters. The cameras on the orbiter and lander were used by the AI-enabled software to find suitable landing spots. These cameras are the Lander Hazard Detection & Avoidance Camera (LHDAC) and the Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC).

Looking Ahead
As India and the world set their sights on the cosmos, Chandrayaan-3 stands as a beacon of what's possible when technology and human endeavor align. AI will continue to be at the forefront of space missions, enabling us to reach further, explore deeper, and achieve feats previously deemed impossible. In the grand tapestry of exploration, Chandrayaan-3's chapter is not only about a lunar landing; it's about the partnership between AI and human ambition, shaping a future where the stars are no longer out of reach.
The successful lunar landing, powered by AI, redefines possibilities in space exploration. This achievement is a testament to collaboration and innovation.
